:This article describes the geography and history of the MGE world. For the site frontpage, see Monster Girl Encyclopedia. For the original book, see Monster Girl Encyclopedia I. The world of the Monster Girl Encyclopedia is one of varied locations and a storied history. Gods and monsters mingle with ordinary humans, elves and dwarves in a land of swords, sorcery, and, most of all, sex. Although the monsters are categorized extensively, much of the broader detail of the world is less clear. For the vast majority of its history, the world was quite different from this; but succubus ascendancy changed it all about a thousand years ago. Now, medieval peasants, knights, wizards and even deities must continue to adapt in a new world order where love and desire reigns supreme,. ==Geography== ===Physical geography=== :Refer to: Zipangu, Dragonia, Mist Continent, and Monsters of the Sea As the world is a construction of the gods rather than nature, even its shape isn't known for certain. It could be a flat earth; it could be a geocentric universe; all we know for sure is that it is not a "planet" as we would understand it. In any case, many fantastic and varied lands are described in the world by the Wandering Scholar and especially Saphirette Spherica, although details on where they all are in relation to each other is very sparse. The Scholar started his journey in the Order lands, which occupy a continental landmass and contain the majority of the world's human population. The Order is a religion and a culture rather than a single nation; former territories since lost to the monsters include Lescatie and possibly Polove , once a sickly, resource-free land of no strategic geographical value whatsoever. Also outside the Order's control are the increasingly common monster-friendly human nations, plus the forest territories of the elves and the underground nations of the dwarves. Also in the main continent, the Desert region is a hot waste of sand and pyramids, the graveyard of a once-great civilization - although new rulers and old ones may be trying to rebuild lost glories. Far to the east of this continent lies a comparatively tiny archipelago country called Zipangu, which means "Kingdom of Fire" in the native language . It is a land of kimonos, shrine maidens, ninjas, and sake. Some of this island nation constitutes bright green Mamono Realm, where monsters and uncorrupted humans live close by; if not quite in harmony, then at least not with the one-sided antagonism that characterizes relationships on various Order lands. The Wandering Scholar reports that a nation from his continent has attempted to invade Zipangu at least once before, but the effort was defeated by a combination of human-monster military co-operation, and kunoichi espionage ravishing the enemy leadership into submission . Described as lying "to the north of Zipangu" , the Mist Continent is a candidate for that invader nation. Populated by panda-girls and kung-fu mice, it's an exotic place that the Wandering Scholar is eager to visit. The other known continent is Dragonia, which is ruled by dragons since the era of the former mamono lords. There exist yet another continent mentioned in passing in the Spell Succubize article of Monster Girl Encyclopedia World Guide III: Sabbath Grimoire. Also described in some detail is not another land but the sea itself; now offering more than a cold, wet death after Poseidon defected to the side of the Mamono Lord. Sea Bishops travel the waves granting men the power to breathe underwater, and once down in the ethereal glow of the mid-layer, you can sex up an eager mermaid or sea slime. Just don't swim too deep; there are ancient secrets lurking in the abyssal night. A notable part of the ocean is Asuramis Sea, where lie the archipelago nation Court Alf. ===Magical geography=== :Refer to: Mamono Realm Handbook A monster's mamono mana doesn't just twist mortal creatures; it corrupts the land itself. The soil turns jet-black; the air becomes heavy and stagnant; and a dark, oppressive gloom hangs over everything. Day and night switch place as heavy clouds block out the sun, yet the light of the moon is enhanced to a surreal, crimson glow. Devilish flora supplants the greenery that humans are used to: crooked black trees with blue leaves, hypnotic glowing flowers, herbs that make you go mute, and immediately deadly fungi. Ominous and evil-looking to humans, it's the familiar sight of home to monsters: a Dark Mamono Realm. The darkest of all Mamono Realms is Royal Makai, an immense land that is the main stronghold of the monsters. The Mamono Lord's castle lies at the center of Succubus Castle Town, the largest city in the world . Here, the spirit corruption is so intense that not even veteran heroes can stand it; conversely, for monsters, it's party central, and the metropolis is a bustling entrepôt of sex tourism and erotic commerce. At the other end of the scale, bright green mamono realms are barely distinguishable from human realms, with blue sky, green grass, and water that doesn't turn into pink goo. While mamono realms are lands which have been magically transmogrified, other lands are magically created. Often having only ephemeral contact with the material realm, these alternate dimensions are usually the private fiefs of god-like beings. Heaven is for the celestial angels and Pandemonium is for the Fallen ones, while Wonderland and the Fairy Kingdom occupy the demented, off-kilter middle ground. The Cat Kingdom is a strange realm of maze-like alleyways and Western architecture ruled over by Bastet. ===Known Locations=== The Main Continent *Desert region: A vast desert with numerous ancient ruins from the time before the reign of the former mamono lords. The resurrected kingdoms in this area, be it by pharaoh, apophis, or incubus chosen by khepris, are inevitably mamono realms. *Lescatie: Once the second largest Order-aligned military nation, now a dark mamono realm and the base of the Extremists faction in the main continent. **Salvarision: A castle town and the headquarters of the Ice Flower Knight Order, with military forces once surpassing the nation's. **Tronmail: A forest village in which three ancient guns were discovered in nearby ruins. *Polove: Saphirette Spherica's hometown. Once a poor human nation with neither natural resource nor strategic value, now a bright green mamono realm rich in nature. *Pressia: A magocracy mentioned as Baphomet Runya Runya's birthplace. *Royal Makai: Also known as the deepest part of the monster realm. It is essentially the capital of all mamono realms, and the mamono lord's castle is located there. *Viminarie: A theocracy prophesied to be destroyed with the crumbling of the earth, but was saved by Shirokuto Sabbath warping the country to another dimension. *Welsple: A scholarly nation aligned-with the Order, Saphirette Spherica studied at Saint Welsple Academy. Other Continents *Dragonia: A continent ruled by dragons that coexist with humans since the era of the former mamono lords. *Mist Continent: A massive continent with a unique nature and entirely independently of the outside world. **The Land of the Four Fiends: One of the three great nations, a dark mamono realm with a monster supremacy ideal. **The Land of the Four Gods: One of the three great nations, a bright green mamono realm where humans and monsters are equals. **The Land of the Four Souls: One of the three great nations, a human supremacy empire seeking total continental domination. Ocean and Archipelago *The Abyss: The deepest part of the sea and the origin point of Monsters of chaos. *Court Alf/Asuramis Sea: Originally an area with constant conflict between the seven island nations, now united as a nation under the Great Songstress Difina. **Al Mar: Considered the gateway to Court Alf as it has natural currents to the other six islands. It's the center of Poseidon's faith, and technically the capital of the nation, with Difina living in the Great Temple of the Sea at the center of Al Mar. **Dé Ryúa: Formerly a poor island conquered and turned into a prison by Diana. The island is now a large red-light district. Ironically, it's notable for having significant faith in the Chief God, with several churches on the island. **Matori: Formerly the base of the Pirates Federation and often clashed with Diana. The island shifted to entertainment and commercial services after the unification of Court Alf, but still keeps the pirate theme. **Mira: A peaceful bright green mamono realm island rich with nature. **Nevia: Formerly an aristocratic island, it still retains a grandiose culture. **Queen Diana: Formerly known as Ship Nation Diana with shipbuilding skills unrivaled by other nations. Most of the nation is now underwater after the legendary kraken Asura Mythra pulled the Giant Battleship Queen Diana down to the bottom of the sea, with only Diana port still on the island. **Saida: A dark mamono realm always covered with thunderclouds. The island is the most technologically-inclined by harnessing electric power via battery stones. *Zipangu: A relatively tiny nation far off the main continent with a different culture from the main continent. Other Dimensions *Fairy Kingdom: The original spirit realm of fairies. *Heaven: The celestial spirit realm and the home of divinities, said to exist far above the sky. *The Kingdom of Cats: The spirit realm created by the feline goddess Bastet. It is a mamono realm inhabited by cat mamono. *Pandemonium: The spirit realm created by the Fallen God. It is a dark mamono realm where time flows strangely. *Wonderland: The whimsical spirit realm created by the Queen of Hearts. ==History== :Refer to: The Utopia that the Mamono Lord Dreams of ===The past=== The oldest known civilization in the world is the original civilization led by a sun god and his blessed pharaohs in the area currently known as the desert region, with its remaining relics dated back before the emergence of monsters. However, there are records and murals that depict figures with the bodies of humans but the heads of dogs or cats - like anubises or sphinxes. Whether these figures represent imagined servants of the god or human priests with animal masks remains a mystery. The sun god's civilization was eventually destroyed by the first Mamono Lord, a giant apophis who united the monsters against the sun god. The world since followed an eternal cycle of rise and fall, man against monster, for countless aeons... until a millennium ago. Legendary events from former ages include the war against the monsters of chaos, the founding of dragon empire Dragonia, and the founding of Lescatie kingdom by the hero who freed the land from monsters. The former Mamono Lord presided over the usual bloodthirsty horde of murderous terrors; and was presumably slain in the usual manner. There're also evidence of forgotten technological advanced civilization that's neither humans nor monsters, such as automaton and the three ancient firearms buried in unknown ruins in Lescatie; although the kingdom claimed the guns to be gifts left by the Chief God. But afterwards, something new happened. A succubus - a lewd, lustful monster that gains power through sex with human men - married a hero, and came up with a plan to break the circle of history. Somehow securing the co-operation of many other monsters , the succubus became the next Mamono Lord. Exploiting the magical connection between the Mamono Lord and all the other monsters, she then poured her own succubus mamono mana into all the devilish creatures under her dominion. The end result was the monsters we know today: their bodies transformed to be as sultry as the succubi, and their taste for human blood changed to an altogether different bodily fluid. Even before the reign of the current mamono lord, there were already known cases of monsters attempting to live with humans. Succubi formed harems of male sex slaves to avoid killing them by completely draining their essence, all-female races such as Harpy and Lamia sometimes fell in love and kept men as husbands, and the Dragon Empire Dragonia had a nationwide policy to coexist with humans. However, this wasn't all of what the Mamono Lord had intended. The metaphysical rules of the world were stronger than she expected, and the new "monster girls" could only bear daughters. This means the monsters have to keep attacking humanity in order to find breeding partners (and to satisfy their new, succubus-inspired lusts). But by this point, the Mamono Lord had raised the ire of the (newly-invested) Chief God, who descended personally to do battle. Inexperienced and hasty, the Chief God was driven back by the combined power of the Mamono Lord and her husband. Retreating to Heaven, she fell back on the tactic of ages past: empowering heroes from her human followers to try and destroy the foe. ===The present and the future=== This is the contemporary state of the world: the Chief God and her Order pitted in war against the Mamono Lord and her monsters. Although the monsters have superhuman strength, supernatural sex appeal, and the inexorable creep of essence corruption on their side, most of them have little interest in actively conquering or expanding their territory, preferring to simply live peaceful, pleasure-filled days with their mates. Also, world conquest alone won't achieve the Mamono Lord's objectives - unless she can muster enough magical power to overwrite the metaphysical rules of the world and enable monster girls to bear incubus sons, eventually there will be no males left and both humans and monster girls will go extinct. For this reason, the Mamono Lord and her husband spend the vast majority of their time locked away having sex, trying to gain enough power to fix this problem . Several gods, such as Poseidon, Hel, and Bastet, have sided with the Mamono Lord, while others like Eros and Ares are officially neutral, with both humans and monster worshippers, though in practice their sympathies are clearly with the side of the monsters and monster-friendly humans. Ironically, despite the Chief God's antagonistic stance against monsters, there are monsters worshiping her and have even somehow received her blessing. The Order of the chief god is quietly ignoring this. The dwarves are now a monster race as the result of male dwarves actively seeking to monsterize their women. As of the present, male dwarves, and pure dwarves are a race that is on the precipice of extinction. Similarly, the dark elves offered their own bodies to succubi, since they were lustful to begin with, and are now a monster race. At least two large-scale spirit realms are created in the current era; the Fallen God's Pandemonium, and the Queen of Hearts' Wonderland. The seven island nations of the Asuramis Sea, which were locked in constant conflict since the previous era, are finally united as Court Alf. Some of the more recent events including Druella the lilim has monsterized the Order nation of Lescatie, turning it into a Mamono Realm, while the Elementalist Association has done the same to Polove. And in the midst of all this, the Wandering Scholar flees execution for blasphemy to far-off lands, documenting all the sexy demons he comes across. ==Cultures== The majority of the world (the main continent, Dragonia, and Court Alf) is a reflection of medieval and renaissance European culture common to fantasy setting, with dark mamono realms leaning toward a gothic aesthetic. There is a mixture of different cultures; with the Desert Region being based on ancient Egyptian-Arabic hybrid, Zipangu being based on medieval Japan, and the Mist Continent being wuxia China. There're also elements of modern days culture, such as Saida's neon light, and Momonika Sabbath's clothing. It's noted that the Chief God's festival being a holiday important to many people Among mamono, the "Anniversary of the Ascension of the Mamono Lord" is commonly celebrated for the gaining of the bodies monsters now have, and their gratitude to the Mamono Lord for it. It’s widely considered a day to dress in special revealing outfits to show off those bodies. ===Languages=== :Refer to: Languages of the MGE The most widely used language among both humans and monsters is the "Chief God Language," which is said to have been brought to humans by the chief god. Since many monsters did not possess any language in the previous era, when they became monster girls they often took on the main language the humans used. This language is good for telling stories and writing poetry, and most literary works by monsters and humans alike are written in this language. There are also races that have their own language, but also use the Chief God language as an additional official language, such as Elvish for elves, and Dwarvish for dwarves. Cultures where the influence of the Order has been weak through history (such as the Mist Continent and Zipangu), have their own, distinct, languages. There is also a general "Monster Language" that has been spoken among the higher-rank monsters since ancient times. It is known for its directness compared to the theistic language of the chief deity, and for having many words that express complex things with a single word. It is thus very suitable for casting magic. This language historically was limited to certain intelligent monster races, such as demons, succubi, vampires and baphomets, and upon gaining sapience in the current era most monsters adopted the chief god language, as it was easier to communicate with humans using this than the monster language, and many monsters that did speak the language gave it up in favor of the chief god language. However, even in the present some specialized Sabbath grimoires are written in this language, and there are many high rank monsters that can speak the monster language. Further, because most monsters that did speak in the previous era still rarely communicated or cooperated with other types of monsters, subtle differences in the monster language developed between races, that humans would define as dialects. These include: * The "Standard Language" is used by demons, baphomets and witches. It is the most formal and easy to use. * The "Inma's Language" contains many words with lewd meanings and tends to be naturally lascivious and seductive. * The "Vampire Language" has many commanding words and tends to be pronounced in a overbearing tone. There is an "Abyssal Language" spoken by some monsters that live in the deep sea. It is completely different from the other monster language. One feature of the "Abyssal language" is that it is only pronounceable by married abyssal monsters, as speaking it requires overlapping her voice with that of her husband when their bodies are linked. This simultaneous speech is possible not through standard telepathy, as that would still have a time delay, but more through the couple being able to outright communicate to each other what the other is going to say or think before they say or think it, as if they were predicting each other's thoughts, allowing them speak as if they were one person. Lastly, there is "Spiritish" special language used for Elemental Magic. ===Faiths=== * The Order of the Chief God - The largest and most mainstream of religions amongst humans and non-monster races. It is headquartered in a large nation sharing its name, headed by a Pope. It espouses that there are multiple gods, the Chief God being prime among them, but there are several sects within it dedicated to gods other than the Chief God. Some gods have been rejected from the pantheon due to siding with monsters in the ongoing conflict, others who are more neutral, granting blessings to humans, as well as monsters, are either tolerated but viewed with suspicion, or quietly ignored. Most Angels follow the gods of this pantheon. It considers monsters to be inherently evil, though exceptions for especially peaceful monsters are made, and the anti-monster fervor varies from kingdom to kingdom. Despite the stance against monster, there're still monsters worshiping the Chief God herself and even received her blessing. At least one church of the Chief God is present in a mamono realm, the 'Dé Ryúa' island of Court Alf, and appears to be on friendly terms with local monsters. Monsters following the Chief God's teaching would ignore the problematic parts about killing monsters or suppression of desire. * The Fallen Faith - The faith surrounding the Fallen God who resides in Pandemonium, their worshipers focus on the corruption of the pure into hedonistic indulgence, prime among the adherents are Dark Angels and Dark Priests. Adherents often perform 'missionary' work converting others to the faith and corrupting them, but upon obtaining a partner they like, these duties cease. Many worshipers will make a pilgrimage to Pandemonium with their partner to experience never-ending pleasure. * Elemental Faith - A faith worshipping various elementals, and exalts those with close ties with Elementals, such as Trolls. It is unknown how the faith is tolerated in Order lands, but it is split between two factions, those who believe that monsterized elementals are a natural evolution for Elementals and should be exalted, and those who believe that monsterized elementals have been corrupted. * Sabbath - The organization has aspects of a religious organization in which witches who strongly idolize their baphomet leaders conduct activities to spread the childish charm and depravity glorified by Sabbath to the world. Sabbath's activities in the ages of former mamono lords often had mocking and blasphemous tone against the Order, such as using Space Creation Spell to create “backsides” of the chief god's churches to conduct their activities. The religious aspects of the organization seems to get toned down in the current era, however, although they still carry out the same activities as a formality due to old traditions. * Snake Cultism - A monster-worshipping faith which exalts serpentine monsters, and apparently worship Echidna as a snake god. To them, the snake is the symbol of bountiful harvest, eternity, and womanhood. Its adherents use various rituals to turn human women in their ranks into members of the Lamia family, while male members seek to become the husbands of Lamia family monsters. The highest goal is to become an Echidna themselves, but since such a ritual is also the most difficult and lengthy, most members are satisfied with seeking to become lower-tier types of Lamia. * Dragon Worship - At least one human nation worships a dragon as their god. This doesn't change after the dragon transformed into a Malef Dragon. * Ryu Worship - Ryu, native to the Zipangu region, are often worshiped as water gods for their ability to control the weather and call rain. Men are gifted to them as husbands, who the Ryu use to gather enough essence to call the rain when needed. The Ryu is attended by Shirohebi. * Inari Worship - Inari are often worshiped in shrines in Zipangu. Occasionally, the Inari will produce Kitsune-bi and turn their shrine maidens into Kitsune-tsuki. * Tezcatlipoca Worship - The Ocelomeh revere these other monsters as gods, practising a violent faith of bestial lust. * Poseidon's Faith - The oceanic nation Court Alf worships Sea Goddess Poseidon as its state religion. * Four Gods - The Land of the Four Gods, a nation of the Mist Continent, reveres four great monsters as divinities. * Four Souls - The Land of the Four Souls, another nation of the Mist Continent, worship the monsters known as the Four Souls as gods. They live in the holy land high in the mountains, disengaged from the strife of the common world. Now and then, however, humans of the Land of the Four Souls travel to them to receive their power. Incubi revered as transcendent sages, or "xian", who have made the power of the holy land their own. * Hel's Faith - As the goddess of life and death whose blessing is required for advanced necromancy, Hel has many undeads as devoted followers including a whole brach of Sabbath. ==Metaphysics== ===The nature of the world=== :Refer to: The Order of God and the Structure of the World In the beginning, there were only the gods. The original Chief God subdued the other deities, and created the material world and the humans within it. The Order claims that the Mamono Lord and the monsters later "emerged from the darkness" to despoil creation; but after interviewing the present Mamono Lord, Wandering Scholar reports that the truth about monsters is that they have always been a part of the world. Monsters were originally bloodthirsty killers in the usual definition of "monster"; but despite (or perhaps because of) that, they formed the other side of a yin-yang balance with humanity. When "humans increase too much in number", a Mamono Lord rises to power and the monsters lay waste to mankind; and when the monsters' numbers are too high, heroes are born to slay the Mamono Lord and plunge the monsters into internecine conflict. The struggle between man and monster is not simply a case of food chains, historical enmity, or territorial ambition; it is a law of nature, fixed by the Gods into the very fundament of creation. There is, however, an undocumented force of Fate working behind the scene. Its effect to the setting is yet to be acknowledged in any book, but it's confirmed to be the reason the Mamono Lord can turned monsters into monster girls. Without Fate on their side, it's impossible for anyone to change the setting again, including revert monsters back to their old era state. ===Magical abilities=== See Essence, Mamono Mana, and Magic. ==Documentation== Most of the information on the world comes from the Wandering Scholar. The in-universe author of Monster Girl Encyclopedia I, Monster Girl Encyclopedia World Guide I: Fallen Maidens, and other books, he is a travelling encyclopaedist out to document the varieties of supposedly evil, all-female "mamono", or monsters, that threaten and prey on the other races of the world - especially the men. The Wandering Scholar is neither omniscient nor (necessarily) impartial, and as a character in his own frame story, he often admits that there is information he doesn't know or must leave to his readers to decide . Wandering Scholar is occasionally helped (or hindered) in his documentarian efforts by co-authors of dubious motivation , including Druella and Saphirette Spherica. His "travelling companion", a leanan sidhe, also provides assistance to the chirographic process . Monster Girl Encyclopedia World Guide III: Sabbath Grimoire breaks the mold by having the baphomet Runya Runya as the main author, with other co-authors such as the witch Vietta covering specific topics and providing comments. An unnamed student of the Wandering Scholar authors two books; Monster Girl Encyclopedia World Guide - Side I: Dragonia and Monster Girl Encyclopedia World Guide - Side II. The first book also has tourism information narrated by several guides across various subjects. Monster Girl Encyclopedia World Guide - Side 1.5: Wilmarina's Honeymoon is an account of Wilmarina Noscrim's honeymoon with her husband in Dragonia. Monster Girl Encyclopedia World Guide - Side III is a collection of information from seven tourist's brochures; one for each island, and narrated by six of the Songstresses and seven unnamed Song Maidens. ==References== <references />
